I’m tiling our bathroom (ceramic tile) and have put cementous backerboard down over a hardwood floor. I’ve got a bad back and can’t stay down on the floor too long. Is there a premixed adhesive you’d recommend so I can just do a small area at a time, instead of having to mix? My preference would be to butter each 6×6 tile. FYI – the floor is solid and level. The install of the backerboard was a breeze.
Also, is there a preferred one that sets fairly quickly? I’ll be doing the walls up to about 34″ high. I’d prefer to get this done in the next couple of days and avoid having to wait too long before I can stand on it. I would however put a small sheet of plywood down to stand on though.
Thanks!
Doug

Doug,
No, there is not a premixed adhesive suitable for tiling a floor. However, you can buy modified thinset and mix it with water in small batches to suit your need. It is really very easy to do.

Thanks Bill, I'll heed your advice. I see so many of those premixes in depot and was wondering if they could do the job on the floor. Thanks!
Doug
those pre mix are ok if you want to replace a couple tiles on a wall, but that is about the limits of it. buy some thin set maybe dip out a gallon of powder and mix it with water. follow the trowel notch guide on the bag.
when you get to the wall you can use a mastic that doesn't need mixed. no as great as thinset but used on walls all the time. larryif a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
Right, but mastic is only for use on walls in DRY LOCATIONS ONLY. Mastic in not a good idea in a shower, but okay on a wainscot, for example.Bill
Thanks - I put the tile down last night and used TEC full flex thin set on the floor. I mixed a few small batches and it was very easy to work with. No problems, it was easier to work with than expected (I thought it was going to become unworkable too soon.
Tomorrow afternoon I plan on starting on the wainscoating. I bought premixed TEC double duty plus ceramic tile adhesive. Since it's just a water closet I should be fine based on the feedback.
Thanks,
Doug
I was wondering if you set the backer board in thinset along with adequate screws.I cant guarantee its necessary but its how i was taught to on floors.
Thanks - I should have mentioned I put thinset under the board and then put screws every 6". Thanks!
