Friend removing and replacing entire hand-split cedar roof. About 20 yrs old. Any value in the shakes, or ideas on how to recycle?

There isn't any value/use I know of for used shakes, except possibly as kindling to start fires, if you dry it out. And, possibly some artsy types could make bird houses or some such out of them.
Those would be perfect on an outbuilding. Instant character! But I suspect they will be in shards after removal, and pretty much useless as shakes forevermore.
I'm waitin' for Junkhound to check in with some suggestions.
Ya, what the others said. If you were given the chance to carefully remove them, and you had an application waiting for the free shakes, then have at it.
But the crew that will be removing them will be pretty merciless. You'll find a big dumpster full of tarry kindling mixed with tar felt.
