This is Texas: Ants? Red, Black, Sugar, carpenter, Fire, all kinds (and some nightmare scary sizes, too . . . )
Toolbox used to have Raid Ant & Roach in the pump (not aerosol) can for small situations. Anything big gets a call to the exterminator (big infestation, big bug(s)--don't matter <g>).
Around my house, I now use a clear spray (Ortho, I think) that is rather nice to work with, effective, no strong odor, no aerosol bouncing bug spray back into your eyes . . .

Unless they are in the dirt crawlspace (just underneath the c.s. vent, right where you need to either sit, support one hand, or rest your head on . . . )
Amdro was the "go to" for fire ants, but now, Logic seems to be the "silver bullet." (Logic has lower toxicity and only targets ants.)Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Grits is the way...
Ants everywhere with their little butts popped like popcorn...
