I am looking to install red cedar shingles next to versatex pvc trimboard in a peak shingle job.
My question revolves around whether I should prestain, seal or paint the shingle work. I am leaning towards stain,
but worry about getting it on pvc trim and how it reacts to cleaning it off.
Q1 – will the red cedar bleed stain the versatex?
Q2 – should I seal & stain the shingles before install?
Q2 – Will stain work ok over Zinnser Cover Stain sealer?
Thanks for any help!

try some off the house is all I can say. You of course would install the pvc corners / rake trim first and run the shingles to them. So, are you painting the trim?
Hi Calvin,
Yeah rakes and corners are done with a back rabbet to to tuck shingles under.
I am leanin g towards staining after sealing .....what do you think?

Being in NW Ohio, I don't see many shingle siding jobs. But I sided our house in shingle panels. We pre-stained the panels as it was way easier flat on horses.
Stain is like water.
Also, with individual shingles getting in the gaps between is not easy by hand. I suppose you could tape off and drop cover siding below and spray. I'd give prestained or dunk and drain yourself shingles a thought. Paint out the trims prior.
just a dumb carpenter from the Glass City trying to retire and getting pretty good at it.....
