I have a client that asked me about refacing his shower. He has one of those plastic molded showers that is not cracked or damaged, just discolored over the years. I know this is done over enamel in a tub, but I’ve never heard of anyone doing this over plastic. I can’t imagine how it wouldn’t just flake off. I told him I’d ask you guys if this is realistic or a waste of time.

Is it plastic, or is it fiberglass? If fiberglass then it can likely be painted with fiberglass boat paint, though I'm not sure how smooth a finish you'll end up with.
Also, fiberglass can be buffed out A LITTLE (though go to far and you'll rub right through the gelcoat).
If it's really plastic (ABS is sometimes used) then there's probably no good fix.
More than likely it is fiberglass as it was probably put in during the late 70's/early 80's. Does the paint really last? (And as I wrote this I thought, well it does on the boat!! DOH!)
