refacing a 10 ft. high poured concrete retaining wall
I have just completed the prep work for my retaining wall project. I had to fill in some deep pockets and fissures with hydraulic mortar mix ( fast drying). I will be using Sakrete S mortar to parge the initial scratch coat ( approx. 1 1/2 – 2 inches thick. Now some old school masons suggested for my top coat mix , that I should add portland ( 20 lbs) to my mortar mix (80 lb bag) for added strength. Is this a good idea?

Oh did I mention that this wall is 10 feet high, 17 feet long and 3 feet thick!!.
A bit of Portland will not hurt, but I you might want to consider a latex additive to help with bonding to the old surface, and make sure the surface has been cleaned. Good luck, you have a lot of mud to haul.
Make sure the wall is evenly soaked and/or misted, a dry wall will mess up the curing process.
Dry winds and hot sun will cause problems too.
When you posted this before, I had the same question--why does this scratch coat have to be 1.5-2" thick?
