Was ask to put some aluminum siding back on a house wall (gable end) it was taken down from. I’v done this before but buy marking each course & leaving the starter strip. The starter was also removed & no course markings were made at this site. Where to start the starter strip? The person who took the siding down did number the back of the siding pieces. Row 1-north 1-mid. 1-south,Row 2 threw Row 17. Wall consist of 1-service door,1-window & 17 rows (courses) Top piece cut so less than the 8″ in height.
16 courses x 8″= 128″ + 6 7/8″ (cut piece)= 134 7/8″ to top of starter strip? (do I add a 1″ for the nailing hem (135 7/8″) ?
Do I start at the window & door where the piece have been cut on the top & bottom & work down for a layout to the starter ? Door close to level (1/8″ in 36″) Window dead on (new).
Kind of lost here not making any loot on this one! Helping out I hope!

I agree you'll be well advised to start with both the top and bottom of the window & door where the pieces have been cut, Then work up and down till you get to the starter. You'll have to lay it out on the ground or driveway so you can look from the layout to the wall. I've done it a couple of times, once when there wasn't any reference marks on the the material. It took me the better part of 16 hours to get it laid out. Good luck!
BilWil Thanks for the reply, sounds like I should start at the door top (highest point) work level across the wall by snapping a level line, then up & down in 8" increments. HOPING the siding was level before taken down so the cuts at the gable pitch line up correctly? I'LL NEED THE LUCK.
I wonder if the course were marked on the wall while the siding was being taken down if could you just go by them or start all over? I now can see some faint markings.?
