Hi folks,
We let our Aussies out last night and they had a close encounter with a skunk. We have a great recipe for getting the odor off the dogs themselves (hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, liquid dish washing detergent) but this time the odor seems to be hanging around the house. For some reason it seems the worst in a room that the dogs didn’t even go into.
Soooooooooooooo, does anyone have a technique for de-skunking the house?

We had the same thing happen about 6 weeks ago, both dog and cat were stupid enough to get sprayed. Second time for the dog (right between the eyes this time.) They're just kittens to her.
Set out several cereal bowls half full of vinegar. The stuff either masks the odor, or removes it, don't know what. My wife sets out vinegar after frying, burning, spilling nail polish remover, whatever.
It's worth a try, though your kids might not like it; mine don't.
Good luck.
Thanks, Nuke! We boiled some vinegar and then put it in a crockpot to keep it simmering. It smells better already. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again!

Thanks, Casey. The recipe for the animals is the same as the one we use. It works great!
Thanks, Nuke. After I read your vinegar suggestion to my wife she remembered her folks boiling vinegar to get rid of house odors when she was a kid. So we boiled some and then left it in a crockpot to simmer over night. It worked! No more skunk odor.
It was funny when we went to the local convenience/liquor store last night. We bought a bottle of white wine, a bottle of Absolute, and two bottles of vinegar. The guy at the counter looked at us funny so we told him that we like VERY dry vodka martinis. That also reminds me of an old joke that maybe I'll post in the woodshed thread...

give the hoiuse a bath in 'mater juice?
...and if I threw in some lettuce that would give me a "house salad"... :-)
