Removing tile w/o damaging sheetrock

I’m remodeling my kitchen, and it’s time to start the demo. Got 4″ tile backsplashes behind the countertops, and stove area. The tile appears to have been set on mastic, with the edges and joints with the counter top sealed with regular calk. I think they put vinyl wall paper on, then put the tile over that.
I’k like to know the best method to remove the tile with as little damage to the rock as possible.
Thanks

Do you mean 4" tile, or that the backsplash is 4" tall? In either case you're probably in luck. Start by making a cut or incision with a sharp utility knife, right along the edge of the tile. Also make a cut along any joint with the counters. Get yourself a putty knife about 2 to 4 inches wide and start peeling. I like to have one knife that is flexible and one that is stiffer for this. If the tile is indeed over wallpaper, you should be able to start peeling off the strippable layer and the tile will come too. The worst case scenario is if some of the gypsum and the drywall outer paper comes off with the tile. If it does, get some Zinzer BIN, white pigmented shellac. Roll on a coat and then re-float the drywall.

Birddog,
Thanks. The tile is 4" square. Probably gonna take out the counters first so I can get at all four sides.
