It’s time to renew my health insurance which is a bizarre process, but thats for another post.
My question is- Are there any concrete changes the new administration is going to make that I should be reluctant to lock myself into a year with my existing insurance?

Are you kidding?
What kind of changes could Obama make ON HIS OWN?

True--Any change, if it happens at all will probably be a long process. It may be my imagination, but I'm not up for renewal until the end of March and the ins. co. seems to be eagerly starting the process a little earlier. I wondered if they knew something I didn't. I remember something in the media about not restricting companies to certain states but opening up competition nationwide.
"I wondered if they knew something I didn't. I remember something in the media about not restricting companies to certain states but opening up competition nationwide."A change like that can take years. And I would not be surprised to see that it would end up in the supreme court. One change that might be done fairly quickly is to change the limits for Schips (or is it ships). At what level of family income you can have and still get health insurance from the state. That just changes the number and the amount of money that the feds give the state for that. But I am not sure of the details of how the states handle as they still have some options in it. And they might need to some matching funds which they would need to provide. And maybe rewrite of regulations, etc.So even that change, while the congress might pass it and it is signed in 4-8 months. I would not be surprised to see that it would take 4-8 months before it is available from the states.Don't really know all of the details, so I might be wrong. But that is a system that is already in place, just changing the numbers..

Thanks for the good analysis.

What kind of new administration are you getting out there in Kansas?

Just wondering if Obama would make any big changes right away.Nothing different locally except the premium going up which isn't anthing new.
Like Bill said, any big changes require changing the entire health care and insurance system. Currently it is governed by you state insurance commission, whatever name they have for it.

Yeah, but it might be fun to do my best Gomer Pyle voice when the insurance rep calls. "But O-bama said he was gonna pay for my insurance."
why do you say " lock myself in for a year", don't you pay the premium monthly?
When I've changed insurance companies, I notify them in writing of the date I want it cancelled.
Some companies even allow this to be done over the phone.

I guess I'll have to pay closer attention. Don't know if I'm contracted for a year or not. Sort of a long story, but I've got a group for my business even though I'm the only employee.
The only thing I've heard about is better options on where you buy your meds.

Thanks
Any big changes will come from those in power, the insurance companies.
They don't try to give more health care, they try to increase their profits.
So expect more convoluted 'plans' with higher premiums, deductibles, or out of pocket fees.
What was I thinking? Anything with the gov't couldn't be simple.
