Repairing Horse Hair Plaster Cracks Nuwall vs Wally’s
Hi,
Looking for people’s experience and recommendations.
I have a bedroom that is probably 11′ x 18′. The ceiling has approx 7-10 full length cracks in the horse hair plaster. The walls are similar, though not as extensive.
I am not sure if I should repair with Big Wally’s or go with NuWall for at least the ceiling. Or maybe a combo of securing the plaster with Wally’s and then a layer of Nuwall?
Any recommendations on which was to go? Going over with new sheetrock is not an option.
Any opinions/insights/recommendations are appreciated! Joe

If the underlying plaster is firm and still reasonably well attaches to the lath, I would not worry about the structure of the plaster. The cracks can be dealt with using a method that has worked very well . Look up “fiba-fuse” which is a fiberglass mat material that can be embedded in joint compound and 1 or 2 additional coats be applied to create a new surface as nice as the original and reinforced via the mat.
We have done several jobs with up to 10,000 sq. ft. of that material being used with great results and customer satisfaction.
The mat is available in a width that covers 3’ .
Don't bother with Big Wally's. Too expensive. You can get the same results with almost identical products for 1/4 the cost using this formula: https://forum.nachi.org/t/plaster-repairs/89427/9
Package of 1.5-2" nylon washers - for against the crack
Package of large 1-1.5" fender washers - to back up the nylon washers
Acrylic masonry bonding additive, diluted with water if needed. This stuff is nearly identical to the “conditioner” Wally’s sells for $32 a bottle.
Loctite Polyseamseal White All Purpose Adhesive Caulk - I dilute this with water to a little thicker than white glue and inject it with an old caulk tube or a turkey injector
