Hi All,
Our living room wall facing the outside had a large crack from the top of the fireplace to the ceiling. We placed wallboard tape and spackling compound. and reapinted. About a year later a second crack appeared about 2 inches next to this one. The crack gets small when the house is damp, and large when the house is dry. Of course, the tape over the first crack shrinks and expands as well. How can I repair these cracks?
Many thanks for your advice,
David in Waterville, Maine

First find out why the FP is moving. Sounds like more than meets the eye.

Agreeing with sphere, the house is moving according to humidfity levels. can't see how it is structrued or what kind of fireplace. Masonry or metal built in?

The house is a 1950s split level made of wood. The fireplace is brick with a large chimeny on the outside of the house.
Thanks,
