repica for the old asbestos siding /shin
I am remodeling a 50s home and need to replace some of the siding. I think it is an asbestos lap siding and was installed showing a11″ lap . I assume the total height of the siding is around 14″… It has vertical groove in it to simulate a cedar shingle? IIt looks to to have about a 1/4″ butt and possible no taper. It came in apparent random lengths like 16″ , 12″ , 8″ , and was installed like that .. I cannot find anything around here to match it with. Is anyone making a non-asbestos siding /shingle to duplicate this old stuff? Thanks Squareshooter

I have some profile 9 on order right now for a job we are adding onto. Sounds like you need profile 12

great link...i just forwarded it to someone who has a lot of broken asbestos siding on their house that needs replacing...thank you
Just recently in JLC, a contributor had the same problem.
He bought a 4x8 sheet of Jame Hardie cement board siding and cut out strips the same height and scored it vertically to approximate the random pattern.

Teal makes a grooved cedar shingle that matches what you describe. And I'm not sure if it's Hardi or someone similar, but I've seen a cement based version.
The older hardware stores carry that in my area, the ones that could stay in business
If asbestos is so dangerous that they wear a little suit to tear this siding off the wall, why is it ok for people to walk around 30 feet away with no protection of any kind. I saw this happen on Eglin AFB, and is it okay.

You do know. not to cut the old asbestos shingle or disturb any more than is absolutely necessary, don't you?
Squareshooter,
You can purchase a cementuous replacement for the "transite" siding you wish to replace.
Be very cautious though, I have seen products listed as "asbestos free" that should have read free asbestos!!!!!!!
Some time a go I was the director for a Haz-Mat Department at a local college.
We specified a replacement product similar to what your looking for and received a pallet of cementuous material marked "asbestos free" had it sampled and it turned out to be about 60% chrysotile asbestos, naturally we sent it back and the vendor did not hesitate.
