Replace 4×4 support with 2 of 2×4??????

I have a small porch over myfront door, about 4ft x 4ft. Fixed to the main structure at one end, with each of the outer corners supported by a 4×4. Both have become twisted over time. Can I replace the 4×4’s with 2×4’s doubled up and would this reduce the possibility of future twisting or should I just replace with 4×4. I will be boxing them in with mahogany.
Thank you,
Mike

So is the only problem that they are twisted? Are they old enough that you think the twisting has stopped? I would suggest that you wrap the existing posts in the mahogany, shimmed out so the mahog is flat and true. Yes, for a 4x4 porch roof, doubled 2x4's would probably be fine. But if tyou're going to cover them anyway, why do the extra work?

Never thought of that! They are probably over 20 yrs old. Solid but with about a 20 deg twist. How would I shim it?

Oh, now you want details! The advice was free. The rest cost money.
I would mark a square outline on the floor. Make sure it allows enough room for clearance at the top. Stand up one board (the north side, for discussion), get it plumb and square, use door shims to space it off the post top & bottom. Tack it in place with the thought that it might have to be reomved. Then stand up the south side board, shim it, make sure it aligns with the north board. Check to be sure there's enough clearance. Nail up the east & west boards. You might not be able to shim the east & west boards, but that's ok cuz they will be nailed to the north & south boards.
You need to think about allowing for air circulaiton and rain drainage.

Ed,
Thank you so much. It seems logical now it's explained.
Mike,
ps.
The cheque's in the mail.
The idea is to allow for the outer wrap to have some "float" with respect to the inner, load bearing, support.Matt
