I just bought a house that the previuos owner built. In the garage it has 2 columns sitting on footer holding up beam. The columns are made of 2×4’s nailed together. He gave us a copy of the original plans and the plans called for steel lolly columns. Should I replace the wooden columns with steel or not worry about it?

Kev,
I'm not sure how it passed inspection which would make me weary about other possible issues. Most definatly replace them. They may have been put in there temporarily and never gotten back to.

Lot of times, in custom work, people want to save money, specially when the dow drops a couple of hundred points, and steel is one of the first things to go, if wood will do. Your "copy" of the drawings may not show revisions, I'm not saying what you got is adequate or not, just a possibility, at least make sure this post is anchored.
no turn left unstoned
You don't say what the posts are holding up, other than a "beam"
It may be that it is perfectly adequate as is. I assume that this is a beam down through the center of the garage holding up ceiling joists. Now if you have a loaded floor for storage or an apartment, dance hall, etc. up there...
In my post to him I figured it was holding up a second floor but youre right Pif who knows what above it....might just be holding up sky hooks
Be well

Or maybe even just holding up the sky....

The idea of 2x4 built-up posts in the garage would make me nervous, and not only because of the load-bearing capacity.
We have a 6x6 post in our garage that I'm thinking about replacing w/steel. See, my wife parks in this garage and sometimes she......... well, the post is all nicked and banged up and I wonder how well it will hold up under the full-on impact of a Volvo XCountry.
I'll wrap that steel column with foam padding.
Glad my wife never reads these posts.
What would make you expect a steel post to stand up against a Volvo in a crash test?
