Replacement Windows and Flashing for Concrete Block/Stucco
Hi,
I need to replace 2 windows in a partially below-grade bedroom – would love to go with casements.
The existing windows were installed as replacements 35 years ago – they are mounted to a wood buck, and the installers covered the gap in the stucco with some sort of plastic trim, which is warping and losing its seal.
I would like to keep the windows as large as possible, but I am trying to determine the proper way to replace these. I have seen the liquid flashing techniques for windows in concrete block, but there is no flashing at all for either existing window from what I can tell. The stucco appears to be applied directly to the concrete block, but I can’t be sure there’s nothing between them.
If I mounted directly to the block (without the buck), I believe I could get a very close fit between the perimeter of the window and the original stucco opening, and then just caulk the gap. But that still leaves me with the flashing problem.
I’m not sure if it’s best to break out the stucco and properly flash it, or not.
If I’m still left with a gap between window and stucco, what is the best way to cover it?
Thanks
