There’s plenty of articles on here about replacing your above grade front door. Are there any good articles that detail replacing my grade level side door? This is on the gable end of my colonial. I bought a replacement door with a composite sill and jambs.

Bonus question: can I replace the vinyl siding at ground level with something else? PVC trim or something at the very bottom? The vinyl siding is impossible to keep clean there.

We just replaced a ground level passage door to the shop, it was a bit below the concrete drive. We had to add a 2x to get it above the cement. Which is no help in your question but installing a new door regardless of its location is the same plumb and square.
For your bonus question - any product you replace the vinyl siding with will get dirty due to the ground right in front. You might want to consider digging it out a bit and putting in brick or cement pavers properly installed with gravel and sand under them. To clean the vinyl siding, you might want to try sodium percarbonate mix a little in a 2 gallon sprayer with hot water, spray, keep it wet for about 10-15 minutes, scrub, rinse off with garden hose.
That’s fair but I’m wondering do I still need a sill pan? How would I flash the door bottom to send the water down if down is into grade? What caulk would you recommend I use at the bottom of the door?
