replacing moen kitchen faucet

martagon | Posted in General Discussion on July 7, 2008 06:31am

So, am I being cheap by only wanting to spend about $150 on a kitchen faucet.  I have a Moen that I got a 5 years ago, have replaced the cartridge twice, and the water isn’t even coming out fast enough to keep the sprayer on.

I took the filter off the end of the tap to check for debris, I checked the valves under the sink, they’re open.  So I think it is somewhere in the cartridge replacement where the stricture originates  — my DH had trouble replacing it.

What can I get for under $200, with a hose and sprayer.  ??One brand favoured over another?? I just don’t want to spend megabucks on a faucet.  Rather spend it on horses.

Have you contacted Moen customer service.

There is a diverter valve in their to operate the sprayer. Not sure where it is in the Moen, but probably under the cartridge/spout.

The Moen cartidges have a lifetime warantee and probably the diverter valve also.

Delta makes good basic units, but so does Moen.

Bill is right; the diverter valve could very well be the source of the problem. Check that before you scrap the whole faucet set. IIRC, a Moen or Delta diverter valve is under twenty bucks.

I don't think it's the diverter valve...  I took off the cover at the end of the faucet, cleaned it all out.  When I turned on the water without the cover, it comes out slowly whether on stream or faucet.  That's why I'm thinking that it's at the shut-off valve  at the hot/cold on/off lever.

That is the aireator. The diverter valve.the diverter valve is down in the base of the faucet. That is what is used to switch the water from spout to the hand sprayer.http://www.rd.com/familyhandyman/content/17548/At the very bottom the show a spout and diverter valve. That likes like a Delta, but not sure. The Moen would be in a similar place, but not sure exactly how to get to it..

I guess I left out the part about it being a faucet on a hose, so it's a combination, not a separate sprayer.  Figured the diverter was in the business end, because when i pushed in the little white circle,it started spraying.  At least the pressure is so low, that I didn't get sprayed inthe face.

With the pull ends there is no diverter valve. But there maybe a restriction in the spray head.It should unscrew from the hose.Try running it with just the hose and see if you get good flow.Is this happening with both full hot and full cold?Where the stop valves under the sink turned full on after replcaing the cartridge.BTW, I just replaced a 20 yr old Perless (Delta) pull out with a Moen. The reason that replaced it was because the cap was corroded on and aireator had broken. That could have all been fixed, but by the time that I got done it would have taken too much time and effort. That said I like the way that the handle works better on the Moen. And the pullout works smoother. But this is compared with a 20 YO unit. The Perless was the first "low cost" pullout available. I think that it cost $125 at the time while most of the other where designer units that start twice that. However, I STRONGLY dislike the way that the sprayer works on the Moen.If you put it in spray mode and turn the water off it reverts to stream. Called Moen and they said that it the all of the pull out and pull downs work. The Perless and other that I have run into stayed in whichever mode that you put it..

work on what you have,if that don't work i am a big follower of delta, not the fanciest or the greatest quality, but very dependable and parts are always avail.

check out this seller on ebay, lots of different stlyes,i just bought 8 delta faucets from this guy[delta kitchens for 20.00 a pcthey are the plain and simple single handle type]. should be here in the next couple days,i'll let you know but i expect they will be fine.            http://cgi.ebay.com/DELTA-11902-WF-Chrome-Orleans-Kitchen-Faucet-Spray-NEW_W0QQitemZ280242333627QQihZ018QQcategoryZ29508QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

I believe Moen faucets are guaranteed for life.  They have sent me replacement parts at no cost.   Moen and Delta are both good brands and should last a long time.   As others have already mentioned: check the diverter valve and the aerator. Good luck.

Frankly, Moen is one of the better brands for the money. If DH had trouble replacing the cartridge there may be something wrong with the reassembly causing your troubles. The diverter valve is a likely suspect.

I agree that Moen is a much better valve than a lot of other products out there.

I would guess that it either isn't assembled right or you are getting sediment / rust particles through the cartridge which plug the passages. I have a few customers where a couple of times a year it is necessary to pull the cartridge and let it soak in CLR for a while to remove buildup.

Even if it needs a new cartridge I would definitely stick with the Moen, as others have said for under 20 bucks it can be fixed.

One other thing, make sure you shut off the water before pulling the cartridge, I had a customer call once with water spraying everywhere because he didn't.

Some of the Moen faucets have a screen in the base of the sprayer. Unscrew the hose from the sprayer, and check for a screen thats plugged.

I put a new Moen in last week, the home owner bought it at HD, it was a low end Moen. Where the pullout spray hose connects to the valve body with a plastic coupler, inside the coupler there was a restrictor, and a dirrection arrow on the coupler. Avoid these cheaper models.

Too late! to avoid those cheaper models  -- suspect that's what I have.  Will take it apart to check that area though.  I only took apart the very end of the faucet.
