Replacing rake baord, what to do about rofing nails?
Hi,
Not sure of the proper terminology of the trim parts but I am replacing the rake board and the smaller piece of trim on top of it. The edge of the asphault shingles is nailed into the rake board. I planned to cut the ends of the nails off but am wondering if there is a better way to handle them. Also, does the roof need to be renailed? I don’t see how to do that unless I nail the shingles from the top and seal the nail heads.
Thanks,
George

George,
Pry the shingle up by sliding a wonder bar along the glue line until you can remove the nail. No need for shingle to be nailed into the facia.

Yup what Coon said although I would add that the shingles don't need to be nailed into the rake trim, but they do need a nail very close to it. In other words if removing the nail into the rake means the next nail in that shingle is more than 4" away from the rake I would certainly add one close to the sheathing edge. To do this you will need to lift the shingle above and sneak a nail in under. This can be difficult to do without damaging the shingles especially if they are old and brittle. A nice sunny warm day will make this work easier because the shingles will be more flexible. Trying to cut the nails will most likely cause more damage than using a bar to pull them.
