I need to replace the batteries in an old 9volt makita impact driver. I just discovered that there are after market companies out there. ONe I found offers six different batteries for the same tool ranging from a ni-cad 15 mah @ $25 to a ni-mh 3300 mah @ $48. Can anyone explain the difference and/ or make recomendations??

mAh is the capacity of the battery- the larger the number, the longer the battery will last.
Bigger batteries take longer to charge and they are heavier than smaller capacity batteries (the seller should be able to provide battery weights). If that is not a concern for you, go with more mAh.
I have 2 Makita 9v drills and I got some after market batteries for about $30 each from an internet guy. They were the middle of the road 2 AH rating but still higher than the OEM unit. I forgot how good a new drill was.
