Tried taking it to your local welder/brazer???
Is there a manufaturer's label or stamp on the star unit, or is it unique enough to identiify from pictures to be able to track down the maker/distributer and see if they have parts ?

no identifying labels or stamps, the hinge arm on the right side just collasped inward from the weight from the spring when you climb the stairs
here's a couple to check, but read this one first:

The basically say you're screwed if the stairs are that old and/or you don't have type-model-year information.

I installed the Werner pull down steel ladder, Series 2200 in my house. It was easy to install. The ladder disconnects from the frame so that the unit can be installed by one person. The frame comes with adjustable hangers that are used to hold it in-place while you screw it to the opening.
The instructions call out for a rough opening that is a bit too big on the long side. I'd measure the metal frame first and make the opening smaller. There are pnumatic lift units that keep it closed; no springs. So the weak point of all the spring ladders, the arm, is eliminated. The arms are also not in your way when using the ladder. About $120. Overall we're very happy with this ladder.http://www.wernerladder.com/newprods/s2200.phpBart
