Respirator while painting Bullseye 1-2-3

ahneedhelp | Posted in General Discussion on July 24, 2003 02:40am

Hello –

I think I had some sort of reaction to the fumes while priming with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3.
Noticed a strong odor, stronger then what I’m used to with latex paint.
Well ventilated room with all windows open.
After about an hour, had a massive hystamine (sp?) attack with runny nose and slight wheezing.

Is this Bullseye 1-2-3 more fumy then regular latex paint ?

I’ll resume with a respirator (purple cartridge rated for rumes, vapor and aesbestos.)
Should I get one specifically rated for paint vapor ?
Saw a 3M resipirator at Lowes in the paint department – around $30.

Any advise or tips would be appreciated.
Never had a reaction like this before….

Bullseye 123 is not a latex primer. IIRC, it is pigmented shellac. If you are unaware, shellac is an alcohol-solution of some sort of insect byproduct (Lac beetles from India, I think).

Perhaps you are allergic to the lac bug stuff; or maybe it's the alcohol (tho you would probably already know that); or perhaps it's whatever pignment was used in the Bullseye.

The use of cartridges for organic vapors should help. But go easy on yourself. We prefer posters who come back for many years.

Vast projects should not be founded on half vast ideas.

      YesMa'am and John -

Thanks so much for the replies and thoughtful comments.

While my sinus continues to pump out the goo and drain, I read up on the material data sheet which says the fumes is not considered toxic.

However, I am going back to continue (as soon as my sinus settles down) with a respirator.

That's a great idea about the surplus respirator.

Is this the full face mask ?

I'll go to my favorite surplus store to check.

Would be nice if they had something that works over eyeglasses.

What type did you get ?

      Does it get hot ?

      Thanks for the tip.

I need to get one of those.

For putting on, just before I pop up in the window, when someone knocks at the door.

          Luka,

Seems like it would be more fun to scare 'em. (g)

Yes, it's full face and it fits over eyeglasses and even beards.  It's Israeli surplus.  It does get hot, though.

          Israeli surplus - thanks.

At least it gives me something to look for.

I'm sure there must be an assortment of masks.

          Actually, I'll call them now.

          Thanks !!

          Called the surlplus place...

Full face mask, U.S., with face shield and single cannister.

Attaches with straps, so it sounds like it's not the hood type.

Can wear glasses, so I'm told.

Mask $39.95 with one catridge, both sealed in a can.

Replacement cartridges, sealed in can, $10...

Now that the war is over, there should be surplus gas masks on the market.  I got one after the 1991 war, it's the absolute bomb for any of this kind of stuff.  You can't even smell it with the mask on.

    Dude,

Shellac has a low flash point.

More than a few people have blown the windows out of their houses by not knowing they were using shellac.

re - Shellac has a low flash point.

      -------

Your point is consistant with the blast of odor that I get when a fresh batch of 1-2-3 is poured out of the bucket or when I'm near the working container.

      It sorta smells like chloroform.

Whatever it is, the odor dissipates quickly.

Must be something that helps the stuff dry very quickly.

This probably also means I can't have too much of it sitting around in an open container without applying it to the wall in a timely manner.

Working in a well ventilated house, with all windows open with a nice breeze.
