The kitchen in the house I just bought has a black linoleum floor that has been covered with glued-down carpet. I’d like to remove the carpet, and restore the linoleum. What solvents can I use to remove the carpet goo without destroying the linoleum? Once the goo is gone, what is the best way to restore the original floor finish?
Thanks for help.

YRP: You might be on your own on this one.
*Is it, in fact, linoleum? Or vinyl?Do you have an area you can experiment in? (e.g., a closet?) I think you'll have to play with different solvents and see what doesn't screw up the finish.(Start with the citrus cleaners.)If it is linoleum, I'd try the "Old House Journal" for ideas on restorability of it.BTW, real linoleum is supposedly making a come back!
*Bob - what are you caling real linoleum? It is sail clothe tacked down to the floor in the center portion - sometimes with paper backing under it. It is sealed with linseed oil (origin of the name lin oil eum), painted decoratively, and then coated with at least three more coats of linseed oil.
*The stuff I have in my kitchen is about 1/4" thick, black through and through. Hard - consistency of peanut brickle...I don't have a hidden closet space or anything, but I suppose I could experiment with the stuff under the oven. I chipped a piece out where it will be fairly visible. I was actually hoping to find hardwood underneath. Now I'm kicking myself for my lack of foresight. I figure since this stuff is pretty jet black, that it shouldn't be to hard to glue/patch/buff and hide my idiocy.-Ron-
*This is starting to sound like an asphaltic asbestos floor covering. Is the surface alligatoring a little?
*I'm at work right now, but when I get home, I'll check for alligatoring.-Ron-
