Remember the dead men.Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.

Yeah, the option being to build the wall in some type of zig-zag pattern which isn't always possible or pleasing.Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.
Why do you want a retaining wall? The purpose will help define the answers.
Do it right, or do it twice.
DW and I are doing one on the back side of my shop with old tires. Place a role down and tamp them full of dirt, step back the next course and do the same. Repeat untill the height is reached and plant all thoe dirt cresents with a vineing type ground cover. A year or two later the tires are hidden by the vines. The tires are free from a local Big-O tire center. May not be pretty to start with, but cheap!
