I need to patch some drywall in a ceiling that has a stomped texture. I was told to scrape and sand the ceiling first and then retexture the whole ceiling. If I don’t the patched texture will not look good. How well do I have to sand the ceiling?

if it was never painted I'd use wet sponges to wipe it smooth. If it has been painted I'd trowel on a skim coat and then texture over that.
I'm not sure if the ceiling has been painted. We took out two walls and patched the ceiling back in. I don't think the ceiling has been painted but it has been there for about 20 years. Tomorrow I will scrape the ceiling and see what else will work.
The guy who is going to do the texture says that I just need to knock off the points and the thickness of the new mud will cover everything else.
