Have thought of when retired may get state license and stick some CDs into a bond posting, etc. and go into ‘business’. The fogged glass post and nobody with knowledge or guts enough in San Diego to do the job got me to post this as have been thinking along these lines for a few years. (Also would do auto repair, HVAC, etc. — mr fixit in general type of thing)
Business model would be zero payment to me, but payment (at about $50/hr equivalent) before the job starts at my estimate is to whatever ones favorite charity is (demo party and planned parenthood an exclusion). Customer pays actuals for materials or provides themselves. Bond would be guarantee to finish the job as usual. One caveat in the work would be flexibility in scheduling (no requireing me to hire others to finish ‘on time’.)
Anyone ever heard of this or tried it?? Any thoughts on liability issues (would likely set up a 501 non-profit to work under to limit liability) or other thoughts on this. Probably someone will say I’d be taking food out of their kids mouths, etc.
Anyway, comments solicited.

Don't think for even a micrsecond of putting your cds up as bond to guarentee your work. Build your business and use your reputation as your "bond".
Sounds like a wonderful service. The current issue of the Journal of Light Construction has a good article about why you should incorporate.
I can't imagine you would need to get bonded for this type of work. I agree that you shouldn't put up anything of significant value unless you're willing to lose it all.
Sounds like a great idea.
