I have installed retrofit (box-frame) in old double-hung openings from both the interior and exterior. Each has it’s pros and cons but I would like to solicit the opinion of anyone who does this regularly as I have done maybe 3 such jobs in the past 5 years.

I like to do from the inside. Used to do this real regular, not anymore. I like working on nice floors ws a ladder. Average 20 minutes a window from tearout to completion!
