Never heard that one. I reuse lumber all the time if it is structurally sound and in good condition. The old stuff like vertical grain Doug-Fir I save for myself and use for woodworking projects.
Sounds like a union job

as I understand it, they were cutting the 2x4's in half and throwing them in the dumpster. when asked why they were throwing away good lumber, said they were required to, like it was code.

They used NEW lumber to build a temp wall and through it out? That's ridiculous. That's like saying you can't use the 2x4 braces once they are taken off to finish the framing.
not their money...

What IMERC said.
It seems downright wasteful to me. If you've got the time to pull the nails then go for it. Besides, if it's an old house, the lumber is probably WAY better quality and much more stable than new green lumber.
Scott.
I spend an inordinate amount of time at work recycling lumber used temporarily.
The only sane explanation is that they got some ungraded lumber for free/almost free. Even then, there's a thousand uses for it.
WTB lazy is more like it...
