rather than let this thread die.. here's what was parked in front of our town all day.. seems Newport's anchorage was full so they parked this over on our side...Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Mike,
That's my tender. I use it to get out to my big boat.

Mike,
That was your view from work!? WOW! Can I come work with you sometime?
I think that's the Royal Princess doing her fall cruise to Canada. We did that one year. A cruise is the only vacation my wife and I care to take anymore. Car rentals, finding a restaurant, driving with a map...too much of a hassle. Gotta love a vacation where you can order 2 entrees at dinner and eat chocolate cake at 1:00 a.m., all while looking at coastline.Ditch
Nice Dyna Ditch, for a second I thought it was my sporty!
Don't mind the name on the pic, it's from the old website for my band.
Mike
Nice Wide Glide Mike,
Lowered in the rear I see.
How 'bout a pic of the sporty, I love sporties. Now that all the Rolex riders have big softtails, sportsters are looked down upon. Sportsters were pretty much all anyone rode 20 years ago.Ditch
Ditch,
When I saw the picture names, "wet cherry" and "racks". I had to look Thinking that if they were what I was hopin for, they would be deleted when the powers that be found them!
Imagine my dissappointment!
Cool pics anyhoo!

.....Uhhhhh......To see that, I would have had to stop at "Headliners" on the way home.......which.... I'm pretty sure..... I saw Mike Gabriels hog in the parking lot...Ditch

I have a new byline you can add to the end of your posts:
"It's a sick world.......and I'm a happy guy!"Ditch
That is my sporty. I built it to look a bit like a softail custom, but still handle and go like a sporty. It started it's life as a 1986 883. Now it's a worked 1200.
Mike
Mike,
Picture fooled me. Bobtail, fat tank, risers, pull backs. Nice conversion.Ditch
Thanks Ditch, believe me you're not the first one. I always liked the look of the glides and the s/t custom in particular. This is the second complete set of sheetmetal and I think the only things still stock are the fork legs, ft wheel, trans, swingarm and frame. I used to run a harley accy/service shop and as you can see, got into a lot of trouble. I think every other paycheck got sucked into it!
Have you done much to yours? What's the scoop?
Mike
Mike,
Here are my scoots.
Dyna is undergoing a long customization. Some new chrome, slightly raked front end, solo saddle, risers, redone lights up front. Cases have never even been opened so performance is crate stock.
Sporty has undergone some of the same cosmetic changes as the dyna. Lowered suspension, and a lot of motor work, stroker kit, 9.5:1 high compression pistons, lot's of screamin eagle bolt ons....carb kit, hot coil. Stock pipes with baffles punched out. This little scooter will get it!
Ditch
Very nice!!
I ran the dyno program at the bike shop I managed and here's a tip(if you want it!).
Sporty:
Get rid of the punched-out oems and put the Screaming Eagle off-roads(slip-ons)efinitely keep the x-over factory upper pipes on the sporty. You'll get a whole bunch of bottom end back. Right now I'll bet it feels like a rocket at about 3500 rpm-that's only because the power is so low below that. It's deceptive. Stock EVO heads flow way better than any preceding head and need a little backpressure to prevent reversion-which is what kills the bottom end VE. The only pipe setup that flows better is the Thunderheader.
Mike

Mike,
Thanks for the info. My Bro-in-law is running 'Thunder Headers' on his fat boy and swears by them.
My mechanic at the dealership recommends the "screamin' eagle performance slip fit torque" add-ons. He agrees that I haven't addressed the low end issue and that for 200 bucks I will see a dramatic improvement before 2000 rpms.Ditch
Mike,
Also, after I added the carb kit the bike contracted a bad case of oil blow-by thru the air cleaner. So much so that the right side of the bike is filthy after a hundred mile ride. The mechanic at the dealership told me to expect that with carb kits on Sporties. I told him that if I wanted to soak the inside of my thigh, I would buy an old drip lube (total loss) Harley. Is he right?Ditch
Yep, usually that oil is burned up through the air cleaner. What I don't with good results is run the breather hose back and down into the drive sprocket cover-instant chain oiler!!
Actually it doesn't kick out enough oil to supplement chain lube but it gets it off my chrome. And it does just disappear down the road-I haven't noticed any particular oil evidence anywhere.
Mike
went to the "Steam Up" in West Greenwich today.. and saw this that might be of interest to you riders..
a '27 Indian that looked like it had been stored in a leaky barn since '30.. the guy that owned it cranked away for about 15 minutes.. then said the hell with it.. gave it apush and rode away....putt.. puttt.. putttttt..
my cousin reminded me that our grandfather used to ride his belt drive Indian about 1910 or so.. when he was selling and installing Carbide Generators in IllinoisMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
WOW, I bet that puppy's worth some bucks. I am seriously digging the original passenger seat-with OH S##T handle no less!
Mike,
Thanks for a great photo! I would love to see that old bike restored. Who's the owner?Ditch
i don't know .. just some dude that loved old bikes...the event was the annual "Steam Up" at the steam museum in West Greenwich off Frenchtown Road.. lot's of cool old thingsMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
I think we're both talking about the same ones Ditch. With all the hype about exhaust systems out there it's hard to believe that HD ones are the best (I sure as hell didn't believe it 'til I compared them). The thunderheader is a bit better, but I never cared for the looks, and the 2-3hp difference wasn't worth it to me.
I've got a dyno printout here from my bike where I compared drag pipes with AR cones(roughly the same flow characteristics as your setup) to the Screaming Chicken slip ons and the difference is indeed dramatic.
No muffler packing:at 3,000 rpm: HP=25, TQ=44lbft; peaks: HP=75@5400rpm, TQ=78@4700rpm
SE slip ons: at 3,000 rpm: HP=39, TQ=70lbft; peaks: HP=82@6,500rpm, TQ=75@4,900rpm
These runs are with my worked 1200, but the effective change was reflected in every other comparo I've done.
