So, we’re renovating a previously unfinished attic. The attic is a simple gable style.
Now, the attic has a ridge vent, but no soffit vents. We were considering going with a “hot roof” – insulating with densepack cellulose (not enough $$$ for foam) up past the ceiling line. We don’t have cathedral ceiling, just bringing the ceiling across flat at 9′.
So, my question is, is the ridge vent a problem at all? In the area above the ceiling, we’ll have a small area of unconditioned space. The ridge vent would ventilate that, except there isn’t much source for fresh air to come in, other than to suck it out through the ceiling.

You might add a static vent or two on the least visible side right above the insulation.
