I just wanted to let you guysandgals know how i fixed my RoboLaser, which had become maddeningly unreliable.
Underneath the cap that slides over the battery compartment on the base unit are the battery contacts. They are a bit thin for the job and need to be pulled back up gently. I told my concrete finisher about it, which fixed his laser level, too, and also the laser level at his brother’s job.
We all had thought it was the switch on the front of the base unit that was getting wonky, bec turning it off and on several times would make the unit come on eventually, but that was a misleading symptom. One fellow had tried exploratory surgery and ended up cruising his kitchen floor for ball bearings….

I have one, too, and will keep this in mind!
It's kinda like the vehicle engine not turning over. Rather than blame the battery, the fix to try is to clean the damn terminals.
I never had a problem with mine in ten years, but i expect i may have stored it with the batteries weighing on the contact tabs enough to slightly depress them. I went so far as to look on the Net for a replacement...about $300 now, so i went back to head-scratching for free.
