I have a question about how to connect a beam to a corner of a house.
I have attached a drawing that shows an existing house and a new addition. The new addition is 9′ x 18′.
A 9′ x9′ porch,
If I want to connect a beam made up of 2 -2×10’s how is the best way to attached it to the building. The building is in New York and built on piers. The post on the outside corner is a sonotube.
The second question is, how do you attach a corner post to a beam made up of 2- 2×10’s going both ways.
Any info would help
Thanks
Frank

You notch the top of the 2x10 double 3" down and 3-1/2" in and then cut the existing outside corner 9-1/2" down from the top plate and sit the girder inside the wall.
This will keep the top of the girder flush with the top plate like your drawing and will be held up by your corner post.
Joe,Is the notch in the corner 6" below the double top plate? On the outside corner of the sketch "2" is toe nailing all that needed, or should the be some kind of fastener used? Thanks
Frank
>> Is the notch in the corner 6" below the double top plate? <<Aro8und here the 2x10's are 9-1/2", so that would give me 6-1/2" below the bottom of the lower top plate. If your 2x10's are only 9", then you would be 6" below.>> On the outside corner of the sketch "2" is toe nailing all that needed, or should the be some kind of fastener used? <<If your talking about where you have them overlapped on x 4x4, then yes it's alright around here anyway. I don't normally use 4x4's for what you're doing, I mostly use 6x6's.Joe Carola
For the 2x10 beam to house corner use a Simpson 2-2x10 inside flange hanger.
I believe Simpson also makes a column cap for the situation where you have two beams meeting at a post.
Might check out their catalouge.
