I’m in the process of building a 24’x24′ detached garage. Currently sheathing the walls and will be setting the trusses next. I had a question on how the gable overhangs need to be framed. I want 18″ overhang around the garage. The part that I’m unsure of is do I just frame up some ladder rafters and then attach that to the gable with fasteners or is it advised to notch the gable top chord and set in out riggers for that fascia board to attach. Any help or direction would be great . BTW this is my first project at this scale
Thanks

has some good info.
You can’t notch a truss. It is engineered and can’t really be modified unless you have an engineer sign off on it.
Best plan would be to make sure the truss order includes specification for shorter gable end trusses to allow room for outriggers above.
Gable trusses are not meant to be structural in the same ways that full span trusses are. they are designed to be supported by the end wall underneath, and provide nailing surface for sheathing.
I framed ladders, then put some support (and decorative) brackets under them for support. Easy and looks nice.
You could also run a lag bolt through the truss unto the ladder "rungs", then I would also put inboard blocking between the outside and next truss to stop deflection.
Details matter.
How long is your overhang, and are you anyplace high winds would be a concern?
Overhangs are 18” on the gable ends. We don’t often get high wind.
