No H clips and no Glue. I always use 5/8" sheathing but alot of guys around here(BT) use 1/2". The only time we ever used H clips is when we used roof trusses @ 2' o.c. Maybe where guys use 1/2" plywood with rafters @16" o.c. they might use H clips but I doubt it.
Never seen or heard of anyone using glue on a roof befor.
Are you sheathing this by yourself?

thanks its been a while since i have done this and it didn't seem right. and yes i will be doing it by my self. Any tips? it only about 10 sheets.

Yeah, some (obvious?) advice: if you're carrying a sheet of plywood on the roof, always keep the sheet uphill of you. Sheets like to act as sails. Tie ladders off. If necessary, be tied off with a safety lanyard and "D" harness (doesn't take much of a fall for a non-shock-absorbing tie-off to turn your spine/pelvis into scrambled eggs), and be careful.
Oh yeah, ice shield is usually one course unless your overhang is deep. I haven't used it on a gable end, but I have used roofing cement to securely glue down the gable shingle edges.
Regards,
Tim Ruttan
I most often carry ply uphill as it just seems easier, but I've been told to carry it down hill for the very same reason you mentioned, if it takes full sail your last option is to let it go, and if it wants to go down hill you dont' want to be between it and the gutter!

In the plans that were approved for my additions the hurricane clips were included as per code....What B.S..whens the last time we had a hurricane on L.I ?
PS......Whats your favorite framing gun? Any suggestions? and I will be using LVL's etc etc. What cha think of the Max....my tool repair guy says forget it cause it takes too long to get parts.
Be nailed hard..lol

I thought glue was a recommendation (not a requirement0 in South east hurricane zones.
Andy,
I built a set of four condominiums in Waltham, MA last winter. The roof had double LVLs for a ridge beam to to avoid having any wall ties. This way the loft could over look the second floor master b room. Well the Archy came wandering in one day to make sure I knew what I was doing. He told me to be sure and use subfloor adhesive and H-clips while sheathing the roof as it was designed to work as a diaphram. I told him my girl has a diaphram and we never use glue. That just got me a blank stare. I did it anyway cuz varying from the plans never seems to get me very far ;) Same archy told me that a nine inch tread cut into my 2x12 stringers was way too much. I told him "no sweat, just go let the GC know that he needs to order 48 14' LVL's to replace the three staircases in each unit" He nodded and wandered off to find the GC. Funny, but the LVL's never showed up. Come to think of it, the archy never came back on site either. Guess things turned out ok anyway.
Oh yeah, my tool guy says the same thing about Max guns....too hard to get parts in a timely manner. Guess we'll stick with the mean green guns for now.
Edited for spelling, edited again to explain why I edited :)

Regarding h-clips and hurricane clips or ties, these are two different animals. H-clips just slip between 2 sheets of plywood, keeping them on the same plane and spreading load. Hurricane ties, such as the Simpson H2.5, tie the rafter/truss to the wall plates to prevent uplift.
We never have hurricanes in the PNW either, but I've seen sections of roof lift off of houses in high winds, even around here.
Hurricane Bob, 1990? (89, 91???)
Hurricane Gloria, 1985, for sure. Moved from one house and into my new one during the big blow. Had two houses and neither had electricity.
I never met a tool I didn't like!

Are your rafters @16" o.c. or @24"o.c.?
I know from reading here that somes guys stick frame rafters 24" o.c. I've never seen that around here. If they stick frame the rafters 24"o.c. then the ceiling beams must be 24"o.c.

I have 5 Paslode Power Master Plus Framing guns and one Dewalt Clipped Head Framing gun and one Hitachi framing coil nailer. I swear by the Power Master. They never break down. Mabe an o-ring once every year and a half. The Dewalt is also an excellent gun but if it breaks down I'll have a problem getting it fixed because they don't sell to many dewalts around here.
I know Tim Uhler has the Max framing guns and a Dewalt and he says the Max is a great gun.
The Paslode Power Master you can't beat especially for the price, I think now there about $260.00.
The real test for all Framing guns is into the Microlams and these do just fine.
Be the Power Master......lol

16 OC...so go figure.
Power Master it is then.....I trust your judgement...looking on Ebay and The Tool Crib.
I'm sick of the Spotnailer at this point that I have.

Andy,
The Spot nailer, is it Red and do you see the bottom of the nails sticking out of the gun? Does it just shoot real fast. My friend would say be carefull that gun has a hair pin trigger and then three people shot themselves and I almost shot myself and then I threw it off the roof onto the concrete.
Now that I think about it your gun might be Blue and my friends gun was a Hubolt Framing gun but I know it was still red.
Be Joe Carola.....he's da man..lol
I'm glad you think so, my wife certainly doesn't. lol.......

My spotnailer is red/orange...been using it for years but in the need to retire it.
Tell your wife.....well....I ain't gettin' in the middle......lol
Be well bro

In my roofing experience which isn't much they always used H clips . that was for new Construction . Which around here means Trusses 24 on center. The only time I have ever seen 16" O. C. around here is on custum homes. but I don't remember if we ever glued it . I don't think so.
My overhang is almost 3 feet on this project due to an existing roof which i am tying in. I needed to match. So i am wondering if I will even need the ice and water shield . The portion of the roof i tore out is about 30 years old. There 9is no sign of water damage. except for the cedar facia. Which is due ( Ithink ) to the gutters being full of leaves all the time. The woods are close , on every side.
On my overhang i extended the gable, as an after thought. ( At the customers request ) my plan called for a max of 14" I extended the top plates and ran a Fly rafter. i plan to pack down the plate on the underside side and box it out with cedar to make it look like a beam. Then i am going to add a Bracket, on both sides. i was thinking Of adding some upside down 2 x 4 joist hangers, on my outlookers. To try and prevent the see saw effect, since my outlookers only run back a little over half way,due to a sky light. And i think i still will. But it is very strong. I am still going to add some kind of straping to help the chance of uplift. In case a wind comes off of the lake. It will cost less now, then later.

I never use glue, I'm not sure why but thats not how I was taught and the building depts. here in Florida do not require it. They do require solid blocking at all panel joints within 4 feet of a gable and these must be glued. The H clips provide two functions. They allow room for expantion and contraction of the plywood and help stiffen the panel edges between the trusses or rafters. The stiffening is important for 1/2 inch ply (not to mention that OSB garbage) If you are using 5/8 or greater you can space the sheets with the shank of a nail and forego the clips
