Looking for help
I am bidding on a roof job with a two man crew. Two layers asphalt to be removed, felt the roof and cover with 25 yr. asphalt shingles. Can anyone give me a price per square including hauling away old shingles. Roof is walkable with easy access for my dump. Job is in western PA and I have not bid on a roof in years.

bill.... you want the competitive price .. $140
you want the price you can make money with ...$500...
none of it matters.. the price you need is how much it will cost YOU.. plus overhead plus profit... stop thinking that everyone but you knows what they're doing.. the average roofer has no more idea than the man in the moon what they should be charging...

I'm in Pgh...the rest of the bids against ya will be around $150/sq. Plenty of rip off roofers around here......even the bigger names. The typical "good" job I see might not leak......but I'll wave at ya every morning!
When I do the odd roof.....I only do a complete tear off.......almost never reuse flashing and/or drip......and ice guard even if all the other's bidding said it wasn't needed.
That way...the customers decide if a great job is worth it to them....usually not...which is fine by me!
Last full roof was a wedding/housewarming present to a good friend of mine. 17 sq...by myself.....they had it hauled away. I matched the price of the guy they would go with if I didn't want it.......and gave them a great job at rock bottom prices!
So if you are gonna match a roofers prices......be prepered to not make money.
I even made them wait till a nice week was comming....told them if I was gonna work for free....I'm at least gonna enjoy the weather! Jeff * Jeff J. Buck/ Buck Construction/ Pittsburgh, PA *

Bill,
From the info you've provided, I would charge $214.00 per square plus $2.00 for each foot of valley and $1.00 for each foot of ridge (or hip), labor and all material (all new drip edge, flashing, ice/water shield, 30# felt, 25 year shingles) PLUS the cost of the dumpster (about 350.00).
Of course, I haven't sold any jobs at these prices (yet). I've only bid three (two out of town that I had little shot at, but for the practice...) at these prices and I haven't heard back on one of them yet, but I've been told that I'm in the middle on the other two.

150 for 1 layer rip 160 for two layer rip. That includes Ice/water shield, ridge vent , 30lb felt, dumpster, 3 tab shingles, nails, edging, you should add the cost of reflashing chimney and other flashings as jobs can vary greatly. If they want upgrades on shingles add acccordingly. Put in a clause for decking replacment, I put in $30.00 per sheet for 1/2 inch labor / materials. I also put in owner must supply permits. Don't forget to add the average cost of your local go go bar expenses if you can get away with it.
Go Go bar expenses if you can get away with it? HUH? And you accused me of gouging. Shame on you. LOL
Hey a guys gotta do something with that extra dollar burning a hole in his pocket. LOL.
150/sg plus misc.
Some parts of country the dump fee wouyld be $25, while other it would be $600.
Mike is the only one on this post who made any sense at all without even trying to answer the original question. I can only say that I just finished a two layer tear off on tongue and groove. When we finished and I broke down the job at the office, it took just under 3 hours per sq. to tear it off, clean it up, roof it, and collect the check. My speed of shingling is average, maybe alittle quicker than some. But at 3 hours per sq., how much do you need to make is the question that only you can answer. Good luck and bid honest.
Here in MN. insurance companies pay 235.00 per square 1 layer tear off, permit, labor, materials, flashing, vents and disposal. This would be on a walkable roof.
