I don’t work with shingles anymore than I have to. I hate shingles.
So cutting in a valley or 6 last week, I couldn’t find my favorite roofing knife…like a screwdriver but the business end has a hook blade AND a straight blade in one. I’ve had it for years and years, Malco maybe.
I also don’t always have hook blades handy, and as you may know, them sukkers are pricey for how long they last.
So rooting through my tool drawers in the van, I spy my painters 5-in1 or 8-in1 or 10-in 1 waht ever they are upto now, I have like 6 floating around.
Lightbulb went off! I used a chainsaw file to sharpen the curve or hook. Up on the roof I could use it flat to separate old sealed shingles, and then cutting valley angles, it was like butter. It was HOT so they were soft ( often a hook will then wander or tear a shingle) but it was like magic. Cut from the font or back, it stayed sharp for a lot of cutting.
Next day, before I leave the van, I give it few swipes with the chain saw file and I’m good to go.
Try it, you’ll flip.

I often thought of that, my van has more WMD and slicer/dicers than any hoodnik would even think of carrying. One of my customers saw my duct knife ( you know, double edged Malco, carbon steel, wood handle?) and his jaw dropped. LOLSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Back in the day, I recall being questioned ferociously by a Texas Ranger about the Machete` and rigging axe in my toolbox. Isuspect had they been up front with me, they would have become state property

I almost cut my fingers off with one of those things.
I prefer a nice serrated steal knife.

Then you might like this one. When I was in the air force I was going to throw a decompression party at my place the day after we got back from an overseas deployment.
My jet's crew chief and a couple of his weapons buddies decide to do a little decorating at my place for the party. They brought a couple of inert Mk-82 bombs (concrete filled 500 pounders) over my place and set them in the deep end of my pool.
A couple of weeks later I pulled one out and had it hanging out the trunk of my car while driving back to base.
Next thing I see are blue and red flashing lights in the rear view mirror.
"Where you goin', son?" sez the policeman.
"The Governor's Mansion"
He didn't have a sense of humor.
When I sold my house, it still had the other Mk-82 in the pool. Which, believe it or not, was written in the real estate property disclosure. The realtor said it was the highlight of the tour whenever she showed the property.
hey.... i've had a Malco Duct knife for many years

very good tipo{as i go searching for my 10 in one covered with crusty paint}.
I also use big tin snips to cut the valleys or shingles, The comp is so heavy now it takes a lotta pull with the hook blade..
I try and not cut the valleys if its to hot, If i can i will do it first thing in the morn.
Im gonna like trying this to pick up stuck comp, I use a wood chisel and thin screwdriver now.
or just try this

No one should regard themselve as "God's gift to man." But rather a mere man whos gifts are from God.
Like Dry wall and concrete, I don't want to get good and fast at shingles, someone would want more out of me then..LOL
I'm multi talented, and try to focus on the stuff I like, but sometimes these little hiccups come along and I try to do a work around that makes the nasty parts less nasty.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

You are selling yourself short :)
That sounds like it's worth a try; I never leave the ground without a 5-in-1 anyway.
Mainly, tho, I cut shingles by flipping them over and pretending I'm dyslexic: Score-n-snap, upside-down-and-backwards....

Ya still can do that, but with thick lams, you can strike again and be all the way through. Or cut a snapped line on the face for a layover valley.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I like your 5 in 1 tip. Did you change the shape of the 5 in 1 or just sharpen the inside of the hook - and did you sharpen the other side for the regular cuts (from the back of the shingles)?
Fonzie, Sorry to report that Sphere got booted off of BT permanently so he won't be replying to your post.
Did he really? Was this Tavern stuff? I never requested Tavern access, is it really that silly in there?Man, Duane's one of my BT and Fest buddies.I'll miss him not being here. He has to be one of the smartest woodworking and wood finishing guys around.
Sphere got the Boot? Forever? Man. I didn't realize that. Duane wasn't usually particularly radical in his posts and is a great resource on any number of topics and just an all-around class act. I gotta say I'm surprised. Hope you're mistaken and the ban is only temporary.
Guess I'm gonna have to get used to the different forum format over at QT. (As much as folks hate the forum software here, I gotta say I like it way bettern' QT. Easier for me to only view the unread stuff and keep up with what's going on.)Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PAEverything fits, until you put glue on it.
Yep, confirmed.
Barring mod input from the powers that be retriveing Sphere from the nether world of normality he has received a lifetime ban from BT with no posting or reading capabilities.
He would continually come up with some good reference stuff when folks were asking questions. helped me dramatically a time or two myself.
Here lies Sphere, fallen comrad.
May he rest in peace.
So what was it, a Modifartical Infarction?
a stroke of genius?
a final Filly Photo?

As I understand it from the rumor mill of other threads he and SaunchoRon were getting into it on a thread somewhere.
Prob a poli thread I had on ignore so I missed it.
be must be someone missed the mark
Rumors of Sphere's lifetime ban have been greatly exaggerated, by Sphere himself, I presume. That's all I'll say about it. . .to protect the innocent, or the guilty. Or both. No worries, though,

I've known SPHERE from his posts here, and he is too boney and sinewy for a barbeque. I hear he's sunburnt as well.

BT should have paid Sphere a handsome retainer to post at this site. His knowledge gave this site credence and a reason to visit. I see Sphere ripping down I75 to his next work site occasionally. He is always into something different and his posts are always entertaining. stinky
