Hi everyone, I’m living on the West Coast of B. C. and have learned that this is not a good environment for shakes. Whats puzzling me is that some roofs can last 30 yrs and others 10. These are all very different roofs so some have obviously been too shallow, on the shady north side or overhung with cedar boughs( this is the worst for a shake roof), but some just rot for no apparent reason. I’m going to be replacing another rotted shake roof soon and am wondering what our options might be. The owner loves the look of the shakes and really wants to be able to use shakes again. He was wondering if we could get treated shakes or treat them ourselves, if not what could we use that would give the house that textured, organic look to the roof? Any ideas would be great. Thanks, Vern.
