Hi,
Fortunate to live close by a sawmill that does strictly cypress, Axley Bros in Largo FL, Would rough cut cypress make a good pergola for mounting on columns? Will it need putting through a planner or is rough sawn finished enough?

Planed or not, it is an excellent choice.

Strictly your choice, but I like it planed to show the beauty of the wood.
Another cypress project - from 2006. This was sanded up a bit, but it was pretty smooth to start with. It does show off the pretty wood.

I rebuilt a cypress fence that was 15 yrs old.
The horizontal surfaces will rot.
My reccomendation is to stain heavily and top surfaces cut with a slope or bevel.
