i am wanting to lay cypress boards as a floor in our little log cabin. we just like that rustic feeling. carpenters are disagreeing with me. they tell me that it would shrink and have large cracks?? i am not opposed to “cracks” . i think that just adds to the rustic feeling. we used cypress on the porches and love it. it has a “rough sawn” look. what do you say, guys? please advise.

We're carpenters too!
co-incidentally, I have a three ton trailer full of rough cut cypress flooring that we just tore out of a house. It'll make some decent kindling. The owner originally thought the rough old-time look would be nice, but soon discovered that it was impossible to mop or sweep clean and that the socks wore out fast on their feet and that slivers were uncomfortable.

Lana,
It is pretty common down here to do floors like that but they are sanded lightly to remove the fuzz and splinters. Three coats of a good finnish and they sweep and mop fine. It's called "dirty top".
Install at the right moisture content for your area and they won't shrink much.
