Working on the back patio of my own house. Presently old layer of 1/2″ small agg. concrete over old brick; concrete broken and missing in places; about 400 ft. sq. Good drainage to a floor drain. Most of the perimeter is bounded by masonry building, but there are a couple of wood fences between the backyards as well.
Plan is for brick pavers. My present plan is to mortar in a border of pavers around the perimeter to hold the sand. Mortar in pavers around the floor drain with open head joints and surround that with landscape fabric to hold the sand (and allow for drainage of any water that gets under the patio brick). Fill the field with sand, compact, and lay pavers as in the usual way, with sharp pointing sand swept in the joints, etc.
I’d also like to lay the paver border without any head joints (i.e. touching at the head joints but mortared underneath) so it tends to look like the field.
How does this concept sound?
Any better ideas or warnings?

I'll give you the equivalent of a bump--sounds fine to me, but among other things I am not, I am not a mason (though I did lay three blocks once--two of which I layed upside down (found out after I did it). Landscape fabric, mortared preimeter and open head joints around drain all sound like good ideas.
