My two new guns are the newest Max guns and I love them!!!
I think the site is http://WWW.MAXUSACORP.COM if it's wrongthen Google Max nail guns.
I had a lurker from BT call me the other day to see if I wanted to travel out to Montauk Point here on L.I. I'm just too busy right now is what I told him but we spoke for a while.
He got prices of doing "perfections" on the walls of $900 WOW!!!
That included the material but still. walls a re a whole lot easier than roofs IMO. You get to stand straight up. Was 5 1/2" exposure.
MAde me feel better that I'm doing it myself here.
$350 seems awefully cheap to me.
A bndl of perfections goes for about $40. Four bndles to a square and the CB aint cheap.
$350 labor seems even too cheap.
I'd have to say $500 a sq sopunds more like it for labor but I do live on the Gold Coast.
Be well......and I'm going back on the roof....adios

Thanks Andy..
I know Mike Smith was pushin ya towards the bostich..and you got something else, just couldnt remember what it was...
I posted to Greencu..that yes indeed my first idea price is way too cheap..glad youse guys are here for a fly it by ya..
gonna google some more for cedar breather..but I will know tomorrow if the roof has any salvageable sheathing..might be gettin even more expensive..
any problems gettin nails fer that Max?
edit ..found the site..cool beans..dealer in Louieville..which model ya usin? coil or stick?

I'm using the coil.
I believe you can load it with a lot more nails than the stick type.
You won't belive how light it is.
I get the nails from my airgun dealer.
If I order under a $100 worrth of nails it's shipped for free overnight and over a $100 he chages me under $10 to ship.
On a rare occasion two nails shot out at the same time and jammed the gun but it only takes about ten seconds to fix it.
Other than that I only have good things to say.
Even comes with a plastic case to keep it in.
Like I keep any tool in its case.
CB is a bit expensive. I think I pay about $100 for two sq worth which is one bag.
My perfections are exactly $38 a bndl plus tax.
GEt yer block plane ready!!!
Be well,

whew..Thanks again Andy and Greencu..
Got the work signed up today..16 sq.
At 600.00 a SQ. for perfections, copper valleys and ridge roll..galvinized drip edge (painted grey)with tear off an additional 100.00 per.
This one is odd tho'..they want me to GO SLOW..they can only keep the finances rolling if I can STRETCH it out over 5 MONTHS!!
Basically, I'll do a few sq. a month..that will leave me time for work on the log castle here..
only 15 mins. from home, and I have a zillion odd jobs to do for them as well..that is all T&M work..seem like real good folks, and have been good to work for so far...never any problems, that's why I agreed to the deal..so we'll see how it pans out..this is new ground for me..usually get a deposit and mid third and then final..
Andy..That MAX gun is freakin expensive dude!! an you gots TWO?..gotsa check out the Bostich...can't swing 430? bucks ( unless I can pay it over 5 months.LOL)..
So thanks again guys..maybe Kentucky ain't such a bad place to work for money after all..

Sphere,
I see you signed allready..........
FWIW, I just did a sidewall job, a little over 12 sq., tear off and replace with R&R's (resawn, rebutted) approx. 2.5 boxes ($250.00) to the square. I priced it at $15,000.00. Made money, but it don't go far here in NY!
Eric
Damn dude..over a grand a sq.!!! That would not fly too well around here...maybe up in the Big City of Lexington..the zillion dollar horse owners mansions..but I'm in the sticks here..
I know how fast cash exits your pockets in New York..BTDT

I paid $400 for each gun.
compared to the prices I got to have the roof done by a roofer the guns were nuttin'.
If you deciede to get that gun than I'll give you the phone number of my supplier. My guess is that you wont pay tax if youre outta NY.
He charges about $7-8 to mail it.
I think the Bostitch gun is just as expensive unless you find a deal somewhere.
How you gonna vent the ridge?
Be well

http://CLIFFORDRENOVATIONS.COM
Andy dude..I found one at http://www.tools-plus.com for 389.00 IIRC..no tax..yeah the Bostitch was 399.00 and up and heavier..also needs a wench to set the nail depth..so nope.
We had a long discussion on the ridge..they wanted a "combed" ridge..I wanted a copper rolled ridge..I finally convinced them the copper was the way...other choice was a woven cap..way too long to install...
glad I got all that flex eel hose..
Greencu will be supplying the copper goodies..
start tear off next week, gotta make some sides for my scrap trailer..buy some more tarps..get a bottle of sun screen.
Oh yeah too..I don't think ther Bostits shoots as many types of nails..like a different thing needed for plastic collated nails..so it's the MAX for me.

The "combed" ridge is the traditional way of doing it around here. They tend to blow off on a regular basis. #2 is the metal ridge roll and as I always say "you can't go wrong with copper". The "Boston" ridge is what I've heard the woven style called, has gotten more popular here since you can buy premade ridge pieces.
Have fun.
SPHERE,
you'll love the MAX gun.
If by chance two nails come out at the same time and jam the tip simply open the loading door and hit the tip of the jammed nails back into the gun with your hammer and they'll fall right out.
Its happened to me maybe 3-4 x but is no biggie.
If theres a site for that rolled copper vent I wouldn't mind seeing it although it may not look right on my old house.
I was thinking of using lathe where I'd nail the capping with spaces tween' the lathe every four feet or so for ventilation.
Let me tell ya........its a slow process this 5 1/2" exposure.
I snap a line at 5 1/2" and at 12". The 5 1/2" line is where my butts go and the 12" line is my nailing line,
I'll be up there again today catchin' rays and listenin' to tunes.....actually I may be up there the rest of my life it's feelin' like.
That eel hose is fantastic by the way!
Be shootin' the shingle

ah, glad we're up and runnin again..the roll ridge will be a helluva lot faster...but like you surmise, they probly din't have that goin on back then..
Like Greencu just posted could ya not get premade caps?
I'm thinkin of a nother layer of breather over the last course (ripped to width of like 5 inchs) and the roll ridge over dat...just like a venta-ridge sorta..I'll figgure out that bridge when I get to it..lol
at least I'll have the gub for my house when this roof is done..last roof gub I had was a PC and it sucked..I used it for window nail flanges and maybe 2 sq of shingles and sold it. The MAX sounds like a keeper, for siding and trim..I don't ever wanna see shingles again..'cept for cedar. My crib will finish out with metal..
have fun bro..

"CB is a bit expensive. I think I pay about $100 for two sq worth which is one bag."
Andy,
As the wife and I have been "talking" about building a new house in the next couple years....With a cedar shake roof.......
Why did you choose the "cedar breather" vs. the traditional way? (over battens) Any advantages to one or the other? Going the CB route looks less labor intensive, but the traditional way has stood the test of time.
So what are the pro's and con's.
Jon
Jon, for one thing..ya can have a solid deck papered in for awhile if the weather messes with ya..
In my job the house already has the deck on and rotted shingles because they were nailsd to the deck..25 yrs. ago. Doubtful they had CB back then.
If I were you and going new const. I'd be tempted for t`he lath..I've heard from another builder who does a lot of cedar in NC that it ain't THAT good..lathe is best.
But he also recomends PT pine shingles too..FWIW

Sphere,
So why not lay down 30# felt, with stringers over that over the rafters, then battens (lathe) perpendicular over that? Kind of like a roof over a roof
Certainly would give plenty of air circulation under the shakes, and negate the exposure issues.
Jon
I've never used cedar breather. I've always used 1x over felt if solid sheathing exists with good results. I've got one cedar shingle roof getting close to 20 years old and its still got a lot of life left. The one down the street that was done after mine ( on plywood) has already been replaced.
I lay my 1x out so the coursing is correct and use them to hang my straight edge from for the course I'm laying. The 1x also gives a place to hang your shingle holders from.
Dont that way cause a problem with existing fascia on the rake? or do ya run a strip up there? And where/how does the underside get its air?
Inquireing minds want to know..

I use a metal (usually copper) drip edge and install it a little loose at both eave and rake. If the customer doesn't want the metal showing on the rake (the more traditional shingle mould only) I stop my furring about 18" from the rake and install a cedar shingle from the end of my furring to the rake to fade the 3/4" out. I also cut my furring in random lengths (no more than about 5' long) and install them with a 2"-3" gap between the butts.
Check the shipping from woodroof.com.
I like that site. I'll check them the next time I need some cedar.
Edited 4/29/2004 2:52 pm ET by greencu
great ideas there for the rake and venting from the eave..learn somethin new everyday..
woodroof.com called with shipping..at 280 a pallet x two pallets it's 560+129 a sq. = 165.00 a sq deliverd here...not too bad.
other place I checked was cedar-shingle.com they wanted a min. of 20 sq. same shipping from Vancouver.
so it's 41.25 a bundle..man cedar IS pricey!..this job is gonna stretch out so long I'm gonna have to store the shingles in the river..
I stripped down my boat trailer today to make it a flat box scrap hauler..looking too good..need kindlin? lol
I'll buzz ya when I get ready for valley stock..late next week maybe..

I'm paying $38 per bndl. from my yard here.
If I miss figure they send me more instantly and allow me to return if I Figured over.
Lets not forget about getting a boom truck to get it up to the ridge. Theres a days worth of work for 2-3 guys right there.
I have a dozen sites I contacted from Canada. The price difference was minimal from my yard.
I don't like buying cedar sight unseen with no re"course" (play on words...oiy).
I'm gonna do the ridges the way I described (my lil' invention) in a previous post with the lathe or PT I'll rip.
I know it'll work awesome.
Tomorrow the entire 32 x 32 garage roof will be done. 22'+ from eaves to the ridge.
The copper drip edges I made for the eaves and gables look awesome...2 1/2" on the face and a 1" flair for the rain to flop off of. 2" onto the roof under the felt and ice and water shield. What a pain in the azz to make....but what isn't? Just isnt something you can buy and these lil' details seem to go a long way....."finishing" touches".
Step flashing on the rakes and I'll be making shortly the copper valley flashing.
Anywho.....
BE thankful for beautiful weather,
a

38 a bundle is a real good deal..I'm lookin at 41.25 ( oK not that much diff)..NO ONE in KY ( this area ) stocks them..yours are 4 bundles to a Sq right?..blue label?
yur drip sounds cool..uh edge that is...these folks got painted galv. and they want to keep it that way cuz the REST of the house ( that don't need a new roof yet) has that..another 20 sq when that part dies..
Never heard of the post about yur invention for a ridge..gotta link?
I cut this one too close..shoulda done more homework b4 I jumped with papers to sign...but new to the state an all, and not having a bunch o' stuff to pick an chose from..I'm the "half a loaf is better than no loaf " kinda guy..gotta get a rep. here and and my feet in some doors..it'll all workout in the end,..they are tossing more oddball stuff my way..I like oddball stuff..remakeing old school desks..thats cool stuff.

As Sphere said.....I put the ply up and felt to keep the weather out.
The CB is very fast and I know it works.
If you look on the Cedar bureau site they show a detailed pic of how to do it the way green is speaking about with 1x over the ply/felt.
By the way expect to spend the rest of your life doing the wood roof.
It takes foreverrrrrrr, even with two guns.
But it sure looks purdy........nicer than any other kind of roofing IMO.

If I were doing it, I probably would do just like you described..
I'm kinda working with the HO's budget on this one..and at 50.00 a SQ for breather and less labor cost than furring the whole thing..I'm inclined to believe that the CB is the way to go (IN THIS CASE)..
as long as ya are aware of how the ventilation is occuring and keeping the wasps out ( thats a big concern here...any little hole anywhere and ya got mud daubers..they filled a lanyard hole in my hammer handle!!, and sockets that are not in a case)..and what details are going on at the dripegde/fascia area..
bottom line, I pretty much am commited to CB on this one.

Duane,
The shakes themselves run close to $200/sq. I haven't done one in a while, but done right around here runs you about $650/sq. plus tear-off.
g
just the guy I was hopin would post..figgured I'd call ya if ya didn't show up here..
yup too cheap..you and Andy sez so..last cedar roof I did was 12 yrs. ago...at 300.00 a sq. mighta lost money then..lol.
this is a new customer..and I will do all the extras to do it better than Joe witha hammer..who did it originally..which is rotting out after 10 yrs..
Thanx Grant
