RRP and Commercial/Public Buildings Inquiry and the EPA
Just rcvd. this from the EPA. I’m on their mailing list as a result of being Certified in the RRP work practices Program. Thought some of you might be interested.
Renovations of homes and child-occupied facilities built prior to 1978 must be performed by certified contractors using lead-safe work practices. EPA is currently in the process of determining whether renovation, repair, and painting activities on public and commercial buildings might also create lead-based paint hazards. For those activities that do create lead-based paint hazards, EPA intends to develop certification, training, and work practice requirements as directed by the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
EPA has opened a comment period to allow for additional data and other information to be submitted by the public and interested stakeholders. This comment period runs through April 1, 2013. In addition, EPA plans to hold a public meeting on renovations in and on public and commercial buildings on June 26, 2013. EPA will publish more details on this public meeting in the Federal Register in the spring of 2013.

You gotta be careful lumping the whole bunch of any group into the crap pile.
At least that's my thinking.
And as far as the RRP rules-
Certainly a problem that up till a few yrs ago was merely swept under the rug..........figuratively speaking.
Take the class and you'll see both sides of the problem. The idea of it's necessity and the outcome of the rules on our remodeling industry. Too often more work and more money trumps the lives of people.
I'm not so quick in dissing these regulations.
I am a little irritated with the 1978 cutoff. Our house, which was built in 1976, contains no significant amount of lead, but theoretically requires all the precautions anyway.

In your case, b/4 preceding with a project as described by the EPA, a lead test is available.
