treeparkcontracting | Posted in General Discussion on December 6, 2023 04:44pm

Is there a RSS feed for subscribers to download “aftershow episodes” to devices?

    Hi treeparkcontracting,

    Not that I've found.

Taunton, if there isn't one, that would be a great add! I'd much prefer to listen to the aftershow in my Bluetooth hearing protection while working, versus sitting down in front of a screen to watch it on YouTube.
Or, if there is one - could you direct me to where us subscribers can find it?

It is far from ideal, however, you can go to the podcast page on the Fine Homebuilding website on your phone's browser and play the podcast through your bluetooth. That is what I do. You do have to stop what you are doing to find and start the podcast and once it is over, you have silence until you go back to your phone to restart your podcast player.

I'd be very interested in this. I generally use Spotify to access the regular podcast while I'm working in the shop. The aftershow is inaccessible (as it may be intended) in this manner. Some way to avoid having to use a PC would be great.

I was surprised when the aftershow wasn't accessible for download like the podcast. My interaction with FHB is primarily via my phone (downloaded podcasts while working) and via the print magazine in the morning with coffee. The only time I use the computer for FHB is when something has gone wrong. As an all access member in 2023, I expect the FHB app to be at least as functional as the PC website. Paying for the aftershow (via an all access membership) should not be a lessor experience than the free podcast. It is my first year as an all access member and so far, the value isn't there for me to continue next year.

I don’t know “jack” about podcasts or most anything to do with a phone, iPad etc., so I passed on the link to this thread to a contact at FHB.

      RSS feed? Beats me.

But are you saying that Bluetooth headphones can’t get the audio of these podcasts?

This from an old retired carpenter that always attempted no distractions while working.

Best of luck if you get the answer.

A podcast is just an audio file that you download onto your device to listen to at your leisure. A RSS feed is a link to somewhere on the internet that I can find that file.

FHB puts out a free podcast that I listen to and anyone can listen to. They also make one just for subscribers but I can only watch that on the website, not download onto my phone and listen on the go.

I know the technology exists to provide access to a paid RSS I think they just need to implement it.

If you haven't checked out the podcast, there is a link at the top of the homepage. They post videos you can watch. There's tons of great information and discussion.

          I understand now, thanks!

I’ve passed this thread onto a contact at Taunton. Hope someone reads it and replies. Might take time depending on whether they think me a P I T A.

          1. paulmagnuscalabro | Dec 12, 2023 04:45pm | #9

            Thanks for passing along, Calvin.
To piggyback on what other noted above...
The way it works right now, it's a bit like having to use your truck's stereo as the jobsite radio. Fine for when you're finishing that cup of coffee, but not ideal for the work day.

            Well,
As you can see my message of passing this along I guess didn't connect.

I’ll try a different way and maybe you’ll get a reply. Make sure you hit the email notification below the reply box in case I get lucky.

I think the value is there, I like supporting the podcast but would definitely like to hear the aftershow since I'm paying for it. I like getting the magazine, reading it and sharing it.

I believe there is a colossal amount of info in the back catalog but I don't really have time to sift through it. I'm glad they do it and publish the project guides.

    Here’s something you can try.
Address the question to Patrick .
And ask that you bring the discussion back here so others can find the answer.

Hi Everybody, Rob Wotzak and Calvin alerted me to this thread. Sorry it's taken so long to respond. The lack of an RRS feed for the Podcast Aftershow has been a source of frustration for me and the rest of the FHB team for months now. As you suggest, you have to be logged into the website to see and hear the Aftershow recording. We're trying to come up with a secure method for downloading the file to your device, but with the recent acquisition of The Taunton Press to Active Interest Media there are a lot of things to be worked out. I promise we'll keep trying to get this resolved in a timely fashion and I'm grateful for your support of the FHB brand and the FHB Podcast. I hope you'll stick with us while we work out the wrinkles.

      Hi Patrick,
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question. I'll admit I was behind on episodes and heard you address issue in a recent podcast release after I made the post. I'm sure you guys will get it figured out eventually. I know it's well above my technical skill.
Going forward, other users will hopefully find this post to answer their question. Thanks for all your hard work!
