Ive been refinishing an old59 diesel tug boat for my future father in law, trying to win his affection. Does any one know of a good quality Spar varnish for some grissled old wood. He loves to watch me work on the lower planks but Im looking for a way to get him more involved with me. Any of you experienced gentlemen have some useful pointers.

Man, this is a long time ago thing - about 15 years. But I used a quart of $20 varnish, marine, on a seaside mahogany railing and it lasted maybe 5 years. The $10 varnish lasted only 1 or 2 years.
Since the revarnishing process (stripping, sanding, staining, etc.) took about 5 days of labor [40 X $5], the extra cost was worth it, IMHO. The new management didn't, priding themselves on saving $10.
Sorry I don't remember the name. Might have been Z-Spar or Captain's or something. But I do remember it had 4 or 5 of those nautical letter flags on the label.
Look for a lot of ultra-violet inhibitors.
