Short of measuring each wall for the square footage, can you tell me if there is a rull of thumb for pricing sheetrock material?
I have approximately 6000 sq ft to be finished. The running length is 700 and the ceiling height is 11′.
Also, is there a huge shortage of sheetrock? I was talking to the manager of a local lumber yard and he told me in three months I wouldn’t even be able to buy it.
In my area currently, it’s $8.70 per 4×8 1/2″.
Wish there was a substitute for it.
Thanks.

Checkout the bookstore offering of several websites (I think Taunton has one) for a book on drywalling. It has some good ideas regarding estimating. It depends on efficient use of various panel sizes. I don't quite understand the 6000 sq ft. you mention. If you have a running length of 700 and 11' walls it would seem that you would have a gross wall area of 7700 sf. No ceiling? As for price--4X8 in the Denver area is $6.70 and that shocked me. $3.70 was the norm here. I asked and was told that some manufacturing facilities were damaged around Arkansas and Tennessee. Combined with a nation wide building boom that meant low supply and high demand thus increasing prices. I assume you are not going to use too many 4x8 sheets due to the number of butt joints you will end up with. Use the longest panels you can get, hang horizontally, and use screws (coarse thread for wood, fine thread for metal) I think the name of the book I'm thinking of is Drywall Basics. Thor
*So far as a rule of thumb, I've heard of people using 3x sqft. It's supposed to be close.Haven't heard anything about shortages though. Sean.

Thanks. I have 6000 sq ft of living space--sorry.
A 4x8 sheet here is $8.70.
Thanks.
*Thanks and sorry for the confused message. I have 6000 sq ft of living space. A 4x8 sheet here is $8.70. I heard the problem was in mining the gypsum. When I got the new price I was told the suppliers are on an allotment. Thanks.
*L This current sheetrock "shortage" may very well just be greed. I remember a few years back that they cooked up a shortage in order to jack up the price. Has anyone else noticed that osb board seems to rise in price around the first of August every year. I wonder if this is in anticipation of a very active hurricane season that causes a sharp increase of demand. I have also heard today that there may be an insulation shortage. Any truth to this?
