Went to LongBeach Washington and watched a new breed of carpenters building out of sand .

Mike- Actually these people do have way to much time and patience , this was a sandcastle competition and first prize was $5000.- seems a shame that the next high tide will take it all away.

Wow!
Bob. Thanks for posting those pics.

Ken - Glad you like the pictures - The castle with all the trees won first prize - it was made buy a family - the 4 kids made all the trees - that was really cool, they take a bucket of wet sand, scoop it up with their hand, and let it drip in blobs that turn out like trees. Bob

I like the castle with the trees too, especially the trees. You'd probably know that there is such an occupation as full time sand castle artist. Working full time they have all the time and patience. It is all relative. Did they use the sand from the beach? In serious competitions they import their own sand to show off their works of art.

Tom - this contest was graded by beginner-novice-and expert- I have no Idea how they categorize your expertise but the sand does come from the beach. this is a bad picture but shows how a backhoe digs a bunch of holes for the contestants to dip buckets into to wet the sand for carving. I was quite impressed with how some of the contestants manufactured their own carving tools out of blades bent in different shapes and fastened to wood handles.Bob

Cool, Habitat is now doing Afghanistan!
Bob,
Those are way cool!!! I would cry as the tide rolled in. I don't think these people have too much time on their hands....I think they have a handle on how to use their time...especially the family doing this together...
