Sand points are used in drilling shallow wells.
In areas where the watertable lies among gravels and sands, you can sledge a 'sand point' into the ground. The point has a hardened tip and is perforated on the sides. This allows it to make its way through gravels and hardpan, yet water will seep into the casing while the fines are kept out of the pump.
It's also called well-pointing in the South. Perforated 1" rods that connect to a 4"-6" pipe that is powered by a powerful deisel pump. Let it run for a day or 2 and it's like digging in the Sahara.
It sucks the water out in an area where there is a high water table or you're digging deep.
