Sanding belts cheap

FastEddie | Posted in Tools for Home Building on February 28, 2008 03:16am

I don’t have a need for these, but at $1.75 each they are hard to pass up.

Abrasive belts 6″ wide x 289″ lg. – $125

Ok will do, man I wish I had the size handy, I don't know if they are all the same size or not ( the sanders) I have only known 3 or 4 and never actually owned or fed and cared for one.

He's actually in transit to Pa so dunno if.when I can catch him.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

If Sphere's bud does not want them, let me know via e-mail, I'll take the whole lot - will probably have to build a new sander to fit the belts! 24 ft + long belts!

Go head and get em , Art.  He is incomunicato now, and I don't have a way of measuring the belt length.  At that price, they'll go fast.

Stroke sanders are easy to make, Motor Drive drum, end drum, and tension idler..it's the X-Y table that can be a challange to whip up.  Drawer slides on a raisable table is prolly good enough.

The table can about 8' with that size belt.  Then make a pair of graphite platens and you're in biz.  They sling a lot of dust.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Fer sure, thanks for the go-ahead. .  Came across a bunch of 18" by 72" belts a few years back so built a sander for that, it thows a lot, esp with a 60 grit belt.

        Sent a separate e-mail to F.Eddie also.

Got one barn just stuffed with extra tools now, probably need to build another shed just for the 'new' sander..

Ok, here's the rest of the story.  I picked them up today, older guy, probably early 60's, has a 2-car garage converted toa woodworking shop, packed full of stuff.  He bought the belts on line, ebay I thnk, and I got the impression they were part of a package deal with other stuff.  He saw 6" belts and was sure they were 48" long to go on his stationary belt sander.  Not.  He wouldn't come down on the price, but I thought it was a good deal so I bought all of them.  Paid $125 for 92 belts, = $1.36 each.

All are new, some still have original labels.  Turns out they are different sizes:  looks like I have 289, 292 and 318" long, and not all are marked.  Here's what I have:

4 belts grey Norton Adalox P120

The rest are red Siawood, made in Switzerland.   (actually I think the product is made in Sw but the belts are cut and glued in NC)

            P80  16

            P100  20

            P120  33

            P150  5

            P180  14

I'm in for half ( inna week or two).

I "Think" the Idler/tensioner has enough adjustment that the few inches diff "ought" not be a huge problem. And if worse comes to worse, a splice is do-able to make lengths. Common to use a diagonal cut and remove the abrasive for 3/4" or so and lap and glue the ends , but directionality has to be observed.

            Thanks Ed.

the last 2 boxes were waiting for me when I got home late yesterday.

Probably be a few months till I get around to making a sander for them, great belts. Might be longer than a few months to get a round tuit, but hopefull won't have to leave for another panic trip tomorrow, 1st full weekend at home for since Feb.

Thinking of making a 6 foot long belt sander vs. stroke sander as I have a 6 ft piece of 1-1/2" thick dead flat phenolic. Will post pix when I get to building the thing.

All the way across the country put the shipping at more than the belt cost, but helps support USPS<>G?

Putting another check for $80 in the mail today - calculated on your 1.75 indiv. belt price, well worth the trouble you went to  package and send.

            Thanks again. .

For those curious amongst you, the postmark is Zuni, VA a really small town west of Norfolk.  I travel that way alot on a 4-lane hwy that is a great alternate to the interstate, and this is my favorite post office.  Never busy, easy in & out.  The population of Zuni is only 120 so I suspect they do things a little differently in the PO, like not using metered stickers.  Some of the shelving and equipment in there looks like it dates back to the ... well I was going to say the last century but that's not good anymore.  It's a nice brick building, about the size of a 2 car garage."Put your creed in your deed."   Emerson
