I am writing a paper for my class and need to know which sliding compound miter saw you prefer and why? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

luke, I'd sure be interested in knowing more details of your paper. To answer your question: Bought a Hitachi 10" dual-bevel slider last April (C10FSH). Went with the Hitachi after reading all the reviews. Decided I needed the tool after nearly cutting off my digits using a table saw/miter guide, cutting caps for an arbor.
Hope this helps
A class where you get to write papers about wodworking tools? Sign me up! Why didn't they have classes like that in architecture school.
FYI - I have a 10" Bosch single bevel compound. Have used it for app. 6yrs. in a professional shop situation. Great saw. Good stability due to the use of 2 guide rails, farily quiet, easy to read indicators for bevel and angle cuts, very accurate, enough power to cut most anything. Wish they made one that beveled both ways just like this one. (Not the new bigger version.)
Hope this helps.
Joe
luke, not a porter cable, the fence is to short and there is no option for a table extension.
The makita and hitachi's I've used are nice saws.
what type of class is the paper for?

I am writing a paper for a graduate course in Trade and Industrial management. I am a very poor writer so please excuse me, and an even worse keyboard man. I will really appreciate your help!
Even though it's much maligned, you might try using the search function and see what pops up. I know there have been quite a number of discussions in the past few months on the SCMS's out there, mostly under the Tools for Home Building section.
Wide variety of preferences out there. Makita, Hitachi, Bosch, DeWalt contingents all exist. I have the DeWalt slider and love it 95% of the time.
FHB Issue #125 had a survey of SCMS's. That was back in 1999 and the Bosch 12" saw was not included but it has a number of very satisfied users posting here on BT.
Good luck on your paper.
I have the Dewalt 12" slider and love it. Stable and accurate. I've had for about 5 yrs with NO problems. Now the Bosch 12" (I like the options) is out Im thinking about selling the dewalt. ANY ONE NEED A 12" DEWALT SLIDER "MAKE AN OFFER"

I'll give you $5; you pay shipping. :)
Note, you didn't say make a serious offer.
Luke, I have heard many good things about the Dewalt - one of the tools that company really got right. Hang here long enough and you'll find many who think Dewalt anything are just HO POS toys, but even some of their big critics are fans of this saw.If everything seems to be going well, you've obviously overlooked something.
Luke,
I wrote the SCMS review for FHB in issue 125. We did pretty extensive review. Get ahold of an old issue if you can. If you can't - locate one, let me know and I'll send you a copy of my manuscript. It won't have photos or the new Bosch 12" listed but it's comprehensive. Look in the past two or three FHB issues in the Tools and Materials column for a review by Gary Katz on the Bosch 12".
If I were buying today I'd bet the Bosch 12" for shop use or intermittant use on jobsites. It has the most and best features but it's big and heavy. For portable work I'd get the Makita 1013. Nearly the capacity of 12" saws, front located miter and slide controls, depth of cut stop, double bevel capability. Good scales for dialing in bevel and miter angles, accurate - drift free cuts. All round good saw. Dewalt 12" is my #2 favorite.

MIKE,
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your time and information. If I can not locate that issue, I would like you to send me your information.
Thanks again!
luke,
I've had the DeWalt 12"er for about five years. Works fine but there are a lot of inconveniences on it such as the "wheel" in the back for the compound cuts. No definite stops and its just a hassle.
The dust bag that I paid about $35 for does not work AT ALL....that alone really bothered me....that they had the nerve to sell that with the machine as an accessory.
The tool works fine but I know there are better CMS's out there.
Be well
andy
