This afternoon I had an interesting chore… scribe a 1×8 to fit against some existing siding. I story-polled it on site and then dropped by the shop and used a band saw and drill press to cut the profile. She fits nice, primed it this evening and will paint it, install, and caulk it tomorrow:

That's a lot of work when some caulk would have done just fine! ;-)

sorry you see it that way...
better craftsmanship at work here...
who said ...
caulk isn't a piece of trim...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!

Here is a pic of the 1x8 installed. Man I'm gonna be out of pixels really fast too. What a drag.
That is a great job.
I love to see quality work. I don't care if is concrete work, plumbing, hvac, electrical, framing, int. & ext. trim, cabinetry or whatever. Done right, it's pretty.
Back when I was building, my framers also built my cabinets. My framing was pretty. My cabinets were beautiful. We did some neat things and it was fun. My carpenters and I are all getting pretty long in the tooth now. I just got back from visiting my old lead carpenter in the hospital. He was having his knees replaced. He first started working for me in 1956.
Unfortunately most won't pay for quality work like that and many just don't seem to be able to appreciate it.
Congratulations and keep up the good work. You are right to be proud of it.
I too admire that work, show's you care. Then I see it's for a vinyl sided house and the two just don't seem to go together. And I have to ask candidly what did that one piece of nice work cost your client, with vinyl on the body of the house, hard to believe they would care enough to have someone produce that one board.
I wuz gonna say the same thing.

It is a condo overlooking a lake, and bordering a wildland park... but clad in vintage 2001 vinyl. Condo assoc. rules prohibit any penetration of the building exterior, so the screen porch work I did needed to be scribed to fit.The scribing only took about an hour, so about the same price as cutting in J-channel.
Brian-Perfect. You're my kind of carp..
Thanks Ken,It is fun scribing to vinyl, because all the cuts are curves... no boring straight lines. :o)Have a great day,Brian
I'm not prying, but that still does not answer my question - Start to finish $$$$ cost 50 l00 150. It can be educational for me and others as to how much people are willing to spend to get something done right. Was it part of the project or T&M? If it ALL only took 1 hr. I'm alot slower than I thought.
My opinion is that my answer to you question will be of dubious value, as you might work faster or slower, work in a different market, etc.I mentioned 1 hr. and that is how long the shop work took me... here is the rest of the story... I also stopped by the lumber yard and grabbed a sample of the Certainteed siding used on the building to trace onto the board (but I was already going to that supplier for a contractor lunch, and met a guy there who needs some alder to trim some windows which I happen to have in stock at my shop so I made a sale there also), then I hit the shop (needed to build a custom jamb and hang a door in it at the shop anyway). The shop work went fast for me because I have good infeed/outfeed support for my band saw and use a pool cue stance for feeding the board into the band saw that makes cutting curves fast and accurate and a drill press makes short work of 17 holes. It took 5 minutes to test fit and take 1/16" off of three teeth with a sanding wheel on a grinder and 30 min to prime and paint the scribed edge.I'll bill the customer for 2 hours @ $50/hr., $25 for the lumber, and might get paid for an article I'm writing on this screen porch project too. The scribed board does make a nice hook or sidebar for the article. That is not why I did it, but it could help me there. I bat about .500 with getting stuff I submit published...Lots of variables unique to each situation.

Hey Brian, hows it going? been awhile since you been around, you must be busy
the work looks good as usual, however i hope you are not pricing your jobs with the thought they might get published as part of the profit. :)
Hi Mike,Doing well, been busy as you surmised. The money from publishing just pays for the time it takes to stop work to take pictures of the process, and time for writing. You have a diverse business model, has that helped you in this economy? All the best,Brian
You have a diverse business model, has that helped you in this economy?
as of right now yes, but only time will tell exactly how well it has worked
so far the best part of every month is when the renters pay the rent :)
It's all a roller coaster so i just try to enjoy the ride. :)~
I have one small rental, and have started work on another... hard to find the time to finish it (this is a good problem to have, if I get slow I'll get that rental done). One of the best builders here bought a liquor store last fall, just as his construction work dried up. I thought that was a smart move.Cheers,Brian
Thanks for the additional info., sorta helps setting a bar. Time and $$ wise. Quite frankly, I'm really impressed with the workmanship that is posted on this site, most times. Can help keep one on their toes and bring their own game to a higher level. Again - Thanks.........
